Native to Ohio, DeTyme POET was born and raised in Cleveland, which is also where his pilgrimage into poetry began. Coming from an environment of music and writing, it was only as short period of time until he would pick up the pen himself and at age 14 he started expressing himself in a way that no other art form could. At age 16 before adopting the stage name DeTyme POET, he was known in the Youngstown area as Young Dave on WRTK Niles, while working with his father, Lynn Tolliver, and his Cousin, David Tolliver of Men @ Large.
The hip hop based metaphors mixed with the creative mind of an enlightened youthful generation developed a style of poetry and a voice for DeTyme. Often living up to his self-proclaimed title of "Son of Slam," there have been many roads for this slam poet to travel down, including stepping away from the classification of "slam" poet. With time came wisdom, with wisdom came words and transformation; On a journey of self discovery came a favorite of favorites "Serpents of Eve," the evolution of serpent to dragon. The poems are just the iceberg, some poems have taken years to perfect the performance or even fully understand intrusively. DeTyme is more than a one dimensional poet, words are a canvas in their own that a performance can paint a multitude of emotions on all at once.
As a writer of all kinds, DeTyme cares to express himself in a way that will simply get others to think. Whether it be about changing negative situations around them or simply learning how to deal with them, Supporting YOUR community, persevering through struggle long enough to lead by example, accepting others differences or even just realizing that there are others like you; his message is to think and be aware. With paper and a pen or on a microphone through hip hop or poetry, the message stays the same.
Currently in Tampa, exploring all avenues under the thought that self expression is poetic in its own right, DeTyme POET has returned to the underground scene in hopes to captivate new audiences and achieve new goals. "Everything is poetic, and to me poetry is everything, I'm at the point now where I just hope I can continue to grow."
In 2008, shortly after the birth of his daughter, DeTyme POET Joined forces with Got Jokes? (Tampa) where personal expression expanded itself in a more comedic manor. Founded by Daniel "Motown Pride," a fellow spoken word performer, The Got Jokes? family was the perfect environment to continue the progression DeTyme has made within his journey as a writer, entertainer and performer.
In 2009 DeTyme Became the Youngest coach to lead a Brave New Voices Youth Team to Finals Stage in the International youth competition Brave New Voices (In collaboration with Youth Speaks & HBO) Shattered Thought has proven to be a staple in the community. Like one would imagine from such an influential youth group, They continue to promote... growth.
Later in that year, DeTyme POET along with Reggie Eldridge started the first PSI registered Poetry slam in the Tampa Bay Area, Sacred Sounds Saturdays. Every 3rd Saturday Tampa Bay locals and performers worldwide compete for the growth of the local art scene in a winner take all scenario! SSS does not know the definition of limitations.
April 2010, Sacred sounds has successfully put on a standing room only TEAM slam and Takeover. Based on the results and support of the community, there will be an ongoing team slam hosted under the name Sacred Sounds open to all teams willing to travel to Tampa. Its clear to see that Tampa Bay has a new show they can call their own, as well as a new community leader who has the cities best interest in mind.
This June the 20th Annual Southern Fried Poetry Slam will take place in Ybor City. Hosted by Dynamic Duo (Reggie Eldridge and DeTyme POET) there will be an energy and presence that Tampa Bay will never forget. Be sure to check for updates and see how you can participate in upcoming events.
